How is MACD calculated?
With the commonly used 12, 26 and 9 settings, the MACD line is the 12-period exponential moving average minus the 26-period EMA. The signal line is a 9-period EMA of the MACD line, while the histogram shows the difference between those two lines. These settings can be changed and depend on the chart timeframe.
What do the signal line and histogram show?
A MACD/signal-line crossover or a change in the histogram can help describe a shift in momentum or trend context. Divergence between price and MACD may also draw attention to weakening momentum. None of these observations confirms the market’s next direction on its own.
MACD limitations
Because MACD is built from moving averages, it is a lagging indicator. Sideways markets can produce repeated crossovers and false signals. Results vary with settings and timeframe, so MACD should be considered alongside price structure, volume and broader market conditions rather than used as a standalone decision rule.
